Beware Ireel.com

Update - Someone actually posted that this sounded like a fair deal to them and we were the ones who screwed up. I figured I would show the screen where it asks for the CC info. Now I know you should always read the fine print, but come on, they make it very hard to find. Nowhere on the sign-up page does it mention cancelling in 5 days and it says that you will only be charged if you upgrade or purchase. From their site "Signing up to iReel is FREE! Credit card information is only required to facilitate future purchases. No charges will be applied to your credit card for signing up as a regular member. Today's charge: $0.00" and "Never any hidden fees We make sure to provide our members with a detailed transaction history so that they know what they are paying for. Credit card information is required to facilitate future purchases only. No charges will appear on your credit card statement, unless you upgrade to Premium Membership or you make a purchase from iReel."

I have not posted in sometime and I am sorry, but these people pissed me off . I wanted to warn anyone who still reads this blog.

Do not sign up for an ireel.com free 5 day preview. The site is for watching movies and videos online. If you do not cancel in the 5 day period they start charging you 34.95 a month until you cancel. I found this out the hard way tonight when checking my bank account online. After 16 minutes and 3 people I got them to refund the money with threat of contacting the States Attorney General.

I'm confused. You signed up for a 5 day trial, didn't cancel in the five days and got charged. That seems fairly normal to me. Sounds like they were really nice to refund you at all...
Anonymous said…
Do you work for them? You are the only person who I have told this story to that thought it sounded like a fair deal. They only mention the fee buried somewhere in 40 paragraphs of text on their TOS page.

It would be fair if it said this on the same page, in letters of equal size, where you sign up for the trial and put in your info. Not buried on some page that most people won't read.

Hey Thanks Paul I was so close to putting in my cc info but decided to do a quick search on google about the cc info.
You were one of the 3
sites I checked and boy am I glad.
You are doing good by having blogged
about this so props and high five.

p.s to the "confused" anonyomous "non-biased" commenter...go fuck a goat.that is all.

Holy shit, what a scam!! I can't believe consumer advocacy groups haven't shut these assholes down yet. "Aug. 18" is clearly a mole for the sleazy scumbags. What a turd. I got my credit card statement today... they screwed me and I'm pissed. They won't like what I have to say to them when they open in the morning.
Andrea said…
Thanks for this. I read over the sign-up page carefully and they make absolutely no mention that it's a trial. There is no way anyone would know that before signing up. Perhaps they make it clear once they have your credit card information, but it seems doubtful.

They say over and over that there is no charge and you'll only pay if you upgrade. That implies action on the user's part. This is definitely shady business.

Glad I did a search and came across this post. :)

Thank you for posting to your blog. I too was completely scammed, and I'd like to think I'm actually savy.... but definitely not smart to give my card.

After 20 minutes of waiting on hold....

I went with the threat of complaining to the Better Business Bureau coupled with lodging a State Attorney General complaint with a sprinkle of "i come from a family of lawyers" and my two months worth of charges were immediately reversed and account cancelled.

It is all over the net. A ton of people are not happy about the way Ireel does business. I am glad I did a quick search on this company. No way now will they get my cc info. It seems like such a scam. Just a personal opinion.
Jeremy M said…
Thanks for the article. After doing some research online, I believe they have staff who do nothing except go around posting positive, glowing reviews of iReel.com everywhere. Is it a scam? Maybe not, but they should do a better job of explaining their hidden charges.

I just experienced the same issue with IREEL. I emailed them and called them to no avail. Finally after my third phone call, I spoke with a rep who finally refunded my 34.99. I think this is one of the worse scams on the internet right now. Plus their selection of "free" movies to watch is terrible, and the movies you actually want to watch, cost an additional rental fee on top of the $35 you pay per month. SCAM!
Anonymous said…
As soon as I signed up and discovered that the site wasn't really free, I called and told them to delete all my cc info. She said she would do so immediately but that it would take 2 days to "completely delete". How will I know that they really have deleted it? They clearly are not into honesty. I should never have given them my info. Now I will worry.
Anonymous said…
I'm sorry, but when I was about to sign up for this site, I did see the fine print and decided it wasn't for me. Too bad you people jump quickly into what you are doing, rather than look deeply into it.
Anonymous said…
Thank you for your blog... I too, thought something was up when they needed my credit card info though this was a *free* membership. I have read every piece of information (tiny type and all) and nowhere is there a mention of a trial period. In fact they are calling it a "Free Regular Membership." This is quoted directly from the site...

"We GUARANTEE that you will NOT BE CHARGED for signing up as a regular member. No charges will appear on your credit card statement unless you upgrade to Premium Membership or make a purchase." Umm, yeah.... right. Thank you for letting people know about these scammers.

Thank you for this - luckily I did the same as some other people and googled before entering my c/c details and I'm glad I did - have been caught out before by these kind of scams (google proflowers.com scam!) so am more cautious now. Can't believe these companies can get away with it...
Anonymous said…
I am so glad I googled it first otherwise I almost bought into it. I became suspicious as soon as they started asking for CC info.
Thank you for posting on this.

So this site does let you watch full movies in HD online, it just charges you 34.95 every month for unlimited movie matching, and you can watch to same movie any number of times? that doesn't sound like a bad deal, but they should have mentioned it, I'm sure some people would still go for it, unless it's one of those fake sites. But anyways people with accounts on this site, upload the movie to megavideo or something lol.
Anonymous said…
Yup, they got me too. Started charging my credit card each month until I noticed. I contacted them to demand that they refund the payments and they refused. Said it was my responsibility to read the fine print...
DO NOT give your cc details to ireel unless you're prepared to start paying $34.95/mth.
Anonymous said…
And a blind man could see that almost all of the positive posts on the internet about ireel are made by the company themselves. Very clever that they begin a question on Yahoo Answers, add their own positive answers and just as quickly close the post by indicating the question resolved (therefore no one can then add any negative comments). Sigh... don't fall for it guys.
Anonymous said…
I wasn't smart enough to Google this BEFORE falling for the scam and having my husband ask me tonight what the $34.95 on our statement is. I had a bad feeling about it right away though, and didn't reply to the confirmation email that came immediately and thought that would cancel it. Nope. They charged me anyway. DO NOT sign up for this unless you want to pay $34.95 a month. Now I will have to call and fight for a refund. Good thing my husband really IS an attorney. They can talk to him if they want to refuse. Thanks for helping others, Blogger.

Good work bloggers! Was looking for a film to watch and found this iReel thing (seductive title too) but very glad I googled it first! Thanks for preventing me from signing up.

The exact same thing happened to me. I will know better next time. I did finally get through to a live person on their phone number. She said they would refund the money with in 7-10 days. Maybe it helped that I never validated the account. I will update this blog, if I actually get my refund. It is deceptive and fraudulent marketing.

Thank you so much for the warning! I was about to give my cc details to this scum company
Is a pity an idea that seems so good for somebody like us who live far from a city get screwed by doggy business practices.... ireel your monthly membership cost less than one babysitter for a night out with my best half but what you do in your signin page is dishonest and I don't want any deals with people like you no matter how many people you hire to support you on the blogs.
Anonymous said…
Thanks a lot, I almost provided them my CC info. Then suddenly thought to google about ireel, wondering why in the hell they require my CC info if they are providing it for free.
These are real assholes i would say.
Anonymous said…
I almost signed up but got very suspicious that they would be asking for my credit card number when everything appeared to be free. I googled ireel and got this site. I agree, it's a scam. Any company asking for credit card numbers with no mention of the cost is pulling the wool over the eyes of a prospective customer.
Anonymous said…
Well I am not sure what you all expected from a place asking for your card information. The minute I hit that page I simply closed my browser and said "teh hell with that".

I figured if they are asking for your card, they will be charging you some where down the line.

That's just common sense.

I am glad that everyone went ahead and shared their experiences with iReel. I just finished getting my money refunded and it took less time and only had to talk to two people. Of course, I immediately asked to speak to a supervisor (after closing my account)and hit him with the triple-layer cake of a complaint with the Washington State Attorney General's Office, The Visa Debit Chargeback process, and independent legal pursuit of a Consumer Protection Violation (which starts at $3,000 per violation). At that point, the supervisor was very reasonable and sent me a confirmation email. Now, I just have to make sure I get credited back in 5-10 days.

Regardless of what is perceived as "common sense," and even if iReel is not guilty of intent to defraud, their method of doing business is predatory and people on the Internet who become victim to their predatory practice(s) should help other consumers avoid or fight back against such practices.

I am never astonished when people get scammed by those offering something for nothing. You should always do a scam check on a company before you do business. Some poor sucker will of been there before and paid loads for the t-shirt. These people should be put out of business agreed and we should be better protected by having a reglatory body for E-business, what do you think?>

I saw this site and had a look at the T&C's and found this "Membership Plans.
All IREEL Online membership plans allow members to access IREEL's free movies library by paying a periodic fee. You can watch as many movies in the IREEL's free movies library as you want."

Free movies by paying a periodic fee? Thats when I decided to look it up. I'll not be signing up !!

yea, thanks, i was about to make a big mistake too but decided to google them when they asked for a CC for no reason. Should have known better

I live in the UK and got sucked in by these twisters.
Don't believe a word of the promises they make about not charging your account! Any intent to do so after the 5 day trial period is very well-hidden in the small print.
How are they allowed to get away with it?
I wish I'd seen these comments before I signed up for this swindle!

I'm from the UK and for some strange and erratic reason was silly enough to give them my credit card details, which was completely out of character as I never do this. I decided to Google iReel once I had signed up and recieved no welcome or confirmation page or email. I wasn't able to sign in either. It was when I found this blog that I started to panic. I tried to cancel immediately but was told there was an error. I phoned their contact number about five minutes ago and was immediately greeted with a pleasant employee. I asked to cancel my account and told her about my problems and she asked for my email address. She told me that my account was still pending and had never been used but would I like to cancel it anyway? I said yes and she said she would cancel my account and send me a confirmation email. I have just recieved the following email:

"Dear Client,
Your account information has been completely removed from our database. Your feedback is very appreciated.
Regards,

Natalie

iReel.com"

So all seems well, so far. I shall have to wait to see if any charges appear on my bank statements.

Yeah thank you, this post is definitely a lifesaver for many of us.

They charge a cancellation fee of $.99 for the convenience of online cancelling of the trial membership. They call this a "convenience fee." Definitely no hidden fees here and cancel anytime... It is a scam. Instead of paying their convenience fee or risk them charging $34.95. I'm cancelling my card.
I already tried to call them and it picks up and says good-bye. I was willing to pay for the movie too, but not this.

Thanks! I thought it might be like hulu.com, you know having commercials to pay for the "free" service. And that the premium would be commercial free. So glad I googled first. No, thanks ireel.
get a real service, you blood leaches.
Anonymous said…
Here is a way to get over on IREEL, all you have to do is give them a "cancelled" credit card info, once they verify the card is legit you'll be able to watch movies but when they try to place a charge on your card your bank won't process it because it will see it as an invalid transaction. Note: you'll have about 3 days before IREEL cancels your account but hey at least you got one over on them :-)

Having fallen prey in the past to scammers, I find myself routinely googling "consumer reviews: (and the too-good-to-be-true proposition).

I agree with Anonymous who wrote on Jan. 3, 2010 that there should be an e-regulatory body that goes after scrounging predators online.

And to the blogger who got scammed, go ahead and try to get your money back by using the "Triple-layer Cake" threat that another blogger mentioned above. It sounds like she might be an attorney, or at least somebody who knows that there are alternatives to feeling foolish and losing your money. Just write yourself out the three options she mentioned in her note and then call IReel or email them.

Another tip: I have always (for decades) had success with getting my money back from scams by calling my credit card company. They will definately believe you when you have been robbed, and I think they then go ahead and report the incident to the state attorney's office.

Thank you main bloggee whose site this is, Sue

A warning to all concerned.Ths is exactly how some dating sites operate.A girl comes on to invite chat, you believe it's genuine, they invite you to cam-to-cam, then you have to give your CC details TO VERIFY YOUR AGE. What nonsense and dishonesty because the dating site has your CC# already. The bitch pleads with you that it's FREE, then they hit you a charge, and say it's your responsibility to unsubscribe. Are there anyone in AG's office aware of these scams? iReel operates like a porn site. I am glad I was forewarned. AAA.

I wish I had read this before. I called twice and messaged them once. They refused to refund my money after four months of thinking someone else had stolen my card numbers...I don't know how you all got your money back..and I very much want to know.

I am glad you have this Blog. I was just at there site and entered a fake credit card number. No it didn't work, but just wanted to see if the would tag my credit card. You bet they did. Then I did a search and came across you blog, this saves me lots of time trying to figure out if this is a scam. The govt. doesn't give a shit about all these scams that try to steal from us, as long as they pay taxes it’s all good with them. People, whenever you go to a web site assume that it run by Bernie Madoff (with my money), then proceed with extreme caution. I have a credit card for the Internet only, that way I can cancel it without a second thought. Another tip is before you sign up with anything do a quick Google on the site, if your lucky you will find a posting like this, sparing you from a ton of grief.
Thanks again Paul

Ok...have to admit, I fell for it. Was snowed in, with out of town guests and couldn't drive to rent a video for the kids....so I found this site. And read the small print, and decided to go the 5 day free route, and cancel immediately. I saved a screen shot of the small print to a word document, so that I would know exactly how to cancel when the time came. We watched our movie, the quality was actually really good on my HD TV and the stream was very fast. Later that day went back to the site, pressed the cancel button, followed the instructions, but never got a cancellation confirmation via email. I did get some type of ambiguous error message. So I did it again, and thought it may have worked. I thought maybe the cancellation email went into my spam folder, but it never arrived. Unfortunately forgot about it for a couple of days, then noticed the charge to my bank acount for $34.99. So I called the company, was told that they could not refund my money because I did not cancel within the 5 days. She indicated they had no record of a contact with me within the 5 days. So I cancelled by phone to ensure no further charges. Since I had paid for the first month premium service, the call center indicated that I could watch any films from their library marked "free" for 30 days. I recieved the cancellation email, along with a note telling me the exact date my premium membership would end. I decided to take advantage of this since I paid for 30 days, but the "free" selection is mainly very old movies, or movies you've never heard of. Have to admit, was feeling ripped off....even though we enjoyed the Abbott and Costello film. Then, I discovered that the site has an Adult Video library of about 200 films. I'm not a porn user....mainly because I would never waste money on it....but since I've already sunk the cash and am trying to get my money's worth....lol. Pls don't get me wrong, I think this is a less then honest approach to getting subscribers....but you can legitimately view movies at a decent quality. Remains to be seen, if they try to charge me for a second month. I've already alerted my bank, not to allow further charges from this company.

I recently worked for ireel.com. If you ever want a refund, just call them up and mention the words bank, or dispute or better business bureau and you will get a full refund. I also know for a fact that the good reviews you see on the internet are actually written by ireel employees. Just a heads up from a disgruntled former employee.
Anonymous said…
Seriously, i am glad they fired you.
Maybe your right, but i think nothing give you the right to tell company details after you got fired. You just show to everybody you have no respect for anything. They probably help you to pay your bill couple times no?? I got fired too from my last job and i don't have any hate...Keep it cool man

What are you talking about? Of course he/she has not only the right, but also the responsibility to reveal bogus practices and scheister activities that he/she witnessed. Any right-thinking person should by all means get the word out on a sleaze-ball company like this one. Keeping silent is a form of support. Good work, former employee, for 1) quitting and 2) telling. They are still at it - I just noticed a charge for $34.95 on my bank statement today, and what I find interesting is that they include their toll-free number in the purchase item. So of course, I called - which gave them my work number.

They claimed I had ordered whatever service they offer in October of 2009 and that I had used an email address that I know I haven't used in over a year. They refunded the most recent charge and canceled my "account".

Then it occurred to me to call my bank and see if there were other charges, and of course there were, so I called ireel again. At first they tried the "you didn't read the terms of service" and "if you are the only person who has your credit card number..." AND they asked for my IP address, supposedly so they could match it to the one used when I "signed up" (I didn't give it to them). After I threatened speaking with lawyers, attorneys general and the BBB and pointed out that there were no confirmation emails from them in that old account, either in my inbox or the spam folder, they were willing to refund the charges going back to November.

I can't thank you enough Paul. You deserve a Paypal link for $5 donations. I just tonight remembered singing up for Ireel a couple of weeks back so I thought I would log in, check for some movies, and just happened to decide to check the status of my account (couldn't quite remember anything but that they wanted a CC for some "security reason". So anyways, I see that I am on the Premium Membership plan for 40 bucks and get pissed! I've fucked up before on trial membership cancellation periods so I figured I may have again. Anyway I cancel and then call them to make sure, bitching to myself and the rep about ambiguity etc. I had never received any confirmation emails! So I attempted to retrace my steps and found a sign up page with the free trail that auto renews-- but this didn't look like my original page I faced that slightly drunken night two weeks prior. Well, thanks to finding this blog and in particular-- the picture of the "sign up page". I was able to call back and explain how their muct be a mistake in that-- and I proceeded to recite all the pertinent info-- and explained how my "regular" "you will not be charged" membership must have accidentally gotten mixed up with the "free trial" pathway...... Anyway, now I have a 40 refund coming my way!

I hate to admit that I got sucked in by these guys and gave them my CC# and found out today that I too was charged $39.95--price is going up apparently--immediately. Can anyone tell me how to contact these jokers to cancel my "account" and try to get my charge refunded. I can't find a phone number anywhere.

Almost fell for it myself. I became suspicious when their HackerSafe and VeriSign logos weren't clickable for verification. Someone want to report them to MacAfee for using their HackerSafe logo without being certified (I couldn't find them in MacAfee's dtabase)

Thanks for the warning folks. You and google saved me a few bucks!

I got hit by this too. The clincher is I was sent to ireel.com by a 3rd party site while using google to look for episodes of an old TV show (Nero Wolfe). It said they had the shows for free. After signing up for the membership (and being assured that regular memberships are "never" charged), then it returned results that they don't actually have anything matching "nero wolfe." So the site saying to go to ireel.com to watch it was a scam. I never downloaded a thing from them, the movies are obviously low budget, low quality flicks and I wouldn't be surprised if it's used to move a bunch of "adult" video material.

I called them just now, 1888-382-8966, and told them I'd file a dispute with my credit card company for a chargeback, I'd contact my state AG, and the better business bureau. After some arguing she gave in, first person I talked to. If I don't have the $$ in the 5-10 days she promised, I'm filing the chargeback. If I do, I'm still contacting the AG and the BBB. These guys are awful and I'm shocked they do what they do from the USA.

BTW, there is another good thread on this here: http://consumerist.com/2009/08/ireelcom-offers-free-trial-downloads-your-money-instead.html
